Basketball betting
Basketball is a high-scoring sport, which changes the shape of the betting. Margins are large and volatile, so the spread and the total do most of the work — the straight moneyline on a heavy favourite is often too short to be interesting.
Competitions worth knowing
- NBA — the deepest basketball market, regular season through to the Finals.
- EuroLeague and domestic European leagues, which play in more South-Africa-friendly hours.
- FIBA international competition, including the World Cup and continental championships.
- NCAA college basketball, particularly around the end-of-season tournament.
The core markets
- Moneyline — the straight winner. Overtime normally counts.
- Spread (handicap) — the favourite gives away points, and this is the primary market.
- Total points, over or under, typically set high given scoring rates.
- Quarter and half betting, priced as their own segments.
- Player props such as points, rebounds and assists.
- Outright championship and conference winners.
The time difference is a real factor
NBA fixtures typically tip off in the South African small hours. That matters practically: late team news — a rested star, a late scratch — often lands after most local punters have gone to bed, and those announcements move spreads sharply. If you are betting the NBA from South Africa, the lineup confirmation is the thing to wait for.
